Mussoorie)
On June 24, 2008 His Holiness Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj addressed another congregation at the Sant Nirankari Satsang Bhawan, Mussoorie. He said: “Devotees always wish that they may continue to have devotional attitude. They pray for the company of saints and opportunities to serve others. In fact, those who get linked with God, posses such feelings. They are convinced that it is better to have this one Supreme Friend instead of many in the world. They find real and lasting happiness in their nearness to God.
On the worldly side, one finds people selfish. Nobody treats others as his own. All relations are based on selfishness. Even love is guided by self interest. Relations continue so long as these interests are served. The moment one does not find his motives served, he breaks away. A devotee, however, never looks forward to the world for happiness. People wonder how he manages to be happy even though, as they know, his life also has seen its ups and downs. The devotees, however, realize that only God can make one smile. They rather wonder how people do not smile inspite of the numerous bounties of the Almighty.
Man has many worldly achievements. Even then he keeps on complaining. The saints, however, thank God for the smile on their face despite adversities. They take it as a kind blessing of the Almighty. While I was on a tour of Garhwal, I found a devotee saying – 'Main Tumhara Hun, Isliye Abhi Tak Nahin Hara Hun'. i.e. I have not yet broken because I belong to Thee. Devotees always carry such feelings.
Kabir Ji also advised man to be in the company of God and not those who do not believe Him. We should not be away from God as also the saints inspite of the ups and downs of the world. The company of those who are away from God only spoils us. So we should always be hued in the divine color and love those who love God. We may be able to maintain our patience, our sense of contentment. And for this we derive strength from the company of the saints. Otherwise, we remain weak and continue to stumble. The saints' inspiration and trust in God provide us the needed encouragement.
Bereft of these feelings, a devotee does not feel happy. On the other hand we have the world. Here man claims to be happy despite all kinds of vices. It is like a situation where we have Nectar on the one side and the Poison on the other. Some take pleasure even in the filth. They do not realize that they can catch some disease also. On the other hand, those who adopt the Nectar, they become immortal. They stand elevated and live in harmony. Like swans, they pick up pearls and do not care for pebbles. Hence the devotees always look for virtues, pray for virtues.”
